Intensive Cotton Development Scheme Sponsored by Central Government

To increase production of cotton of important varieties which have export potential, Intensive Cotton Development Scheme sponsored by the Central Government was started in 1982-83 in the State of Maharashtra and it is still in operation in the state. In this scheme the farmers are trained and encouraged to take cultivation of new varieties. Efforts are also made to increase area under sprinkler and drip irrigation of cotton. The expenditure is shared by the central and the State Governments 75:25. The scheme is implemented in 17 cotton growing districts. Some awards and subsidies are available under this scheme. Components of the scheme are as under

1. Supply of certified seed with subsidy.
2. 25% subsidy on chemicals for protecting crop in seedling stage.
3. 50% subsidy on other measures to protect seedlings.
4. 50% subsidy on sprinkler set.
5. Demonstration on seeds.
6. Training to farmers
7. Demonstration on feromon traps.
8. N.P.V. demonstrations.
9. Field demonstrations on farmers plots.
10. Farmer's tours are arranged to other states which have higher yields in cotton.
11. Crop competitions are organised to encourage farmers to grow new varieties and adopt improved package.
12. From 1997-98 addition is made of drip irrigation sets which are supplied on 90% subsidy.

On similar lines the state Govt. has started cotton development scheme under Vidarbha Development Programme. It includes conduct of field demonstrations, training to farmers supply of plant protection equipment, sprinkler and drip sets etc. Thus efforts are made to increase cotton production through these two schemes in Maharashtra.
