ICAR – National Research on Mithun (NRCM), Nagaland, launched an alternative semi-intensive system of mithun rearing in the farmer’s field at Molvom village under Medziphema block, Dimapur district.
Launching the programme, Dr. H Rahman, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR, Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi, requested the farmers to adopt the new system to improve their livelihood. He urged the institute to replicate the system in various parts of the region.
With the decreasing forest coverage in the region, he recommended that it is imperative to find an alternative rearing system for mithun. Dr. Rahman also urged that such initiative is required to be replicated in other parts of the region.
Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director of the institute, informed that ICAR-NRC on Mithun already demonstrated the package of practices for semi-intensive mithun rearing system successfully in the institute’s Mithun farm at Medziphema. Dr. Mitra emphasized the importance of mithun rearing under the semi-intensive system for income generation and to uplift of socio-economic conditions of the farmers.
