The cultivation of summer moong has been very successful during 2016, says Punjab Agricultural
University (PAU). Summer moong was cultivated on a nearly 60,000 hectares of area in Punjab. Summer moong gave a good yield
because of the protection from unseasonal rains in May and June.
PAU organized field demonstrations at farmers’ fields in 2016 and during this, Green Gram (Moong)
gave a yield of 5q/acre. Some farmers got the yield of 7-8 q/acre after potato cultivation. The
farmers have earned good profit from summer moong cultivation this year and which was sold at
approximately Rs 6000 per quintal in the mandi.
Summer Green Gram (Moong) is an important part of human diet, since it being rich in proteins. In
improving the soil health, its cultivation plays a key role and it is cultivated during Rabi as well as
Kharif season.
In Punjab, mostly during Rabi season, farmers cultivate this crop due to less attack of insect-pests
and more yield. During March 20 to April 10 summer Green Gram (Moong) sown to yields well. The
timely sowing of this crop results in protection from unseasonal rains and insect-pests attack like
whitefly attack.
