Karnataka's MP Calls For Quick Crop Loss Compensation Payment to Farmers

Karadi Sanganna, MP for Koppal and chairman of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee, expressing concern about the delay in farmers receiving crop loss compensation under the Prime Minister’s Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). He instructed the Deputy Commissioner to convene a meeting of insurance companies to make the payment at the earliest.

As B. Sriramulu, who was MP for Ballari, has been elected to the Assembly, Mr. Sanganna presided over the quarterly meeting held here to review development works.

While reviewing the PMFBY, he was informed that 1.36 lakh farmers had availed loans during the previous kharif season and paid Rs. 6.22 crore as premium. Later, a team of officials from the Agriculture and Revenue departments had completed the crop cutting experiments and sent a report.

In turn, only Rs. 1.8 crore has been the claimed and that too has not been disbursed yet. Because of non-payment of compensation, a majority of farmers are unwilling to renew their crop insurance for the current kharif season.

The MP said, “It is a serious matter and should be taken up with the director of the Agriculture Department. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Ramprasath Manohar should immediately take steps to hold a meeting with the officials concerned and the insurance company and get the compensation amount distributed.”

Mr. Sanganna also took exception to the snail’s pace of implemention of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme. He also said, “If execution of the work is delayed, how can the people enjoy benefits under the scheme? The development works will only remain on paper. The Deputy Commissioner should initiate steps to accelerate the pace of ongoing works and complete them on time. Meanwhile, issue notices to the implementing agency and also invoke the penalty clause wherever necessary.”

Mr. Sanganna asked zilla panchayat chief executive officer K.V. Rajendra to conduct a study on the matter. Referring to reports in the media on a number of people migrating despite effective implementation of job schemes under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
