Punjab Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (PAMETI) organized two days training programme on “Organic farming for soil & water conservation” from 25-26 March, 2018 for the benefit of farmers from Punjab under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojna (PMKSY) in collaboration with School of Organic Farming PAU, in which 36 farmers participated.
During the introductory session, Dr. H S Dhaliwal, Director PAMETI explained the objectives of the programme. He stressed that there is need for state farmers to understand the role of organic farming for conservation of water quality and soil health.
He also shared his views about Road Side Display (RSD) model as an entrepreneurial activity for direct marketing of their organic produce to increase the farmer’s income. He said that the farmer is not only restricted to sale of farm produce in the field and domestic market, but also has opportunity to reach global markets as an agri-business entrepreneur. So, there is a need to educate farmers to establish their own agri-enterprises and get more income.
Awareness about principles, prospects, standards and certification regarding Organic Farming was created among the participants by Dr C S Aulakh, Director, School of Organic Farming, PAU. Producing “Safe Food” by Bio Control Agents” & Use of Bio-Fertilizers in Organic Farming was practically demonstrated by various experts from Dept. of Entomology & Microbiology, PAU to the trainees.
Trainees appreciated the efforts made by PAMETI faculty & staff and vowed to apply the knowledge learnt from the training in their fields not only to get better income but also for sustainable production in an eco friendly pollution free environment.
