For Rabi Crop Odisha is going to Provide Quality Onion Seeds to FarmersHome
The Horticulture Department has planned to supply 1000 quintals of quality onion seeds to farmers during
this rabi season for cultivation in 10,000 hectares (ha).
The Department, which has placed the order with the National Seeds Corporation (NSC), has requested the
Central Government undertaking to supply the onion seeds to Deputy Director, Horticulture of all the
districts by October 15.
Odisha is producing more onion than its annual requirement still it is deficit State because of lack of
storage and marketing facilities. The Government has decided to launch Onion Mission and provide easy
loans and high yielding seeds to farmers.
The Odisha State had produced nearly five lakh tonnes of onion in 2014-15 against its annual requirement
of about three lakh tonnes. Balangir, Boudh, Sonepur, Nuapada and Kalahandi are the major onion production
areas of Odisha State.
