By developing first canola quality variety of raya the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has taken a
lead in the country. The varieties were released during the meet of State Variety Approval
Committee held under the Chairmanship of Dr Mangal Singh Sandhu, director, Agriculture, Punjab.
Canola Raya RLC 3 is the first canola quality variety of raya in the country. It is a yellow seeded,
medium tall variety which has been recommended for general cultivation in the state under timely
sown irrigated conditions. It is resistant to white rust. Its average seed yield is 7.3 q/acre with 41.5
per cent oil content. It matures in 145 days.
HD 3086 is a dwarf variety of wheat with an average plant height of 96 cm. The ears of this variety
are medium dense and tapering in shape with white smooth glumes. PBW 677 is another dwarf
variety of wheat with an average plant height of 107 cm. The ears of this variety are medium dense
and tapering in shape with white smooth glumes. Sunflower hybrid PSH 1962 is a short duration,
medium tall hybrid with average plant height of 165 cm.
Besides, PAU has released nine vegetable varieties for commercial cultivation in the Punjab state.
These include four varieties of tomato namely Punjab Varkha Bahar 4, Punjab Gaurav, Punjab Sartaj,
Punjab Red Cherry; one variety each of chilli ‘CH-27,’ broccoli ‘Palam Samridhi,’ radish ‘RB-21,’ brinjal
‘PBH 4’ and garlic ‘PG18.’
