Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Moga organized a one day training programme on Cultivation Practices of Kharif Maize in which Dr. J.S. Chawla (Sr. Maize Breeder/Incharge Maize section) and Dr. Mahesh Kumar Thol, (Agronomist) Dept. of Plant Breeding and Genetics, PAU, Ludhiana visited KVK to deliver lecture on importance and cultivation practices of maize.
Dr. Chawla discussed about the role of maize crop in crop diversification, different uses of maize crop and high yielding hybrids and composite varieties of maize to be cultivated in kharif season. He also explained about the methods of production of hybrid maize seed.
Dr. Amandeep Singh Brar (Deputy Director, KVK, Moga) told about various training programmes being conducted by KVK, Moga and encouraged the farmers to participate in such training programs and other extension activities organized by KVK. In his lecture he suggested crop diversification through cultivation of maize and also elaborated about the recommended varieties of different Kharif crops.
He also mentioned that the seeds of various recommended crops/varieties of PAU is available at KVK, Moga. Dr. Mahesh Kumar discussed the improved cultivation practices of maize hybrids. He also stressed upon the seed rate, time of sowing and seed treatment of all crops.
Mrs. Amanpreet (Asstt. Prof. Agronomy, KVK, Moga) laid stress on the importance of soil and water testing for optimum and increased crop productivity and thus facilitation of need based fertilizer application. She also discussed about common weeds in maize and their management through integrated methods.
Dr. Sahiba Mann Grewal (Asst. Prof. Anim. Sci., KVK, Moga) threw light on the use of maize as an essential and integral part of animal (chicken and cattle) feed as grain, green fodder and silage. Farmers enthusiastically participated in the discussions and volunteered to practice hybrid maize seed production in the near future.
