On the first day of Kisan Mela at Ludhiana on September 22, a crop produce competition will be organized by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).
Divulging this information, Dr K.S. Brar, Convener, Produce Competition Committee, said the samples may be brought personally by the farmers. No produce samples, brought by the District Extension Specialists/faculty of Krishi Vigyan Kendras, will be entertained, he informed. The entries for the competition will be entertained up to11.30 amat Produce Competition Stall, near Kairon Kisan Ghar, PAU, he added.
In vegetables, the mela will see competition in the recommended varieties ofbhindi(okra),karela(bitter gourd), chillies,ram tori,onion andarbi,he said. Their samples sizes should be half kg, he added. Besides, the mela will hold competition in brinjal, radish, cucumber, cowpea or any other vegetable crop, he told. Their sample sizes should be half kg or three pieces, he said, adding that the size ofghiya kaddu(long or round) should be three pieces for the competition.
Among field crops, competition in maize cobs/baby corn, sugarcane, cotton and any other crop will be organized, he informed. The samples sizes of these crops should be five cobs, three or four mature canes, one or three mature plant with bolls, and two or three mature plants, respectively, he said.
In fruits, competition in guava; lime and lemon, amla; malta/grape fruit; papaya and any other seasonal fruit will be held, he told. The sample sizes of guava, lime and lemon, amla should be half kg while of rest of the fruits, it should be three pieces, he added.
Among flowers, competition in cut rose/loose rose (five stems/spikes/250 g), marigold (five stems/spikes), tuberose (rajni gandha- five stems/spikes/250 g) or any other flower will be organized, he said.
