7 Michigan State University (MSU) Disciplines in Top 25 Globally

1 August 2022- Seven academic disciplines at Michigan State University are ranked in the top 25 in the world — with two ranked in the top five — according to a widely used international ranking of universities.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022, released in July, is compiled by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organization focused on higher education research.

More than 1,800 universities across 93 countries are ranked annually based on indicators that include measures of research quality, extent of international collaboration and the highest academic recognitions.

“Michigan State’s 2030 strategic plan recognizes that the university’s excellence and reputation reside in its people, which is reflected once again in these rankings,” said President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D. “Our goals for growing MSU’s research in critical areas of discovery and carrying that knowledge into our academic programs are anchored by our world-class faculty, whose global influence stems from their scholarly excellence and engagement in their fields.”

For the third straight year, MSU is ranked No. 2 in the world for education.

“These rankings illuminate the dedicated, impactful work of scholars across our college and institution who are addressing challenges in global education,” said Jerlando F. L. Jackson, dean of the MSU College of Education and MSU Foundation Professor of Education. “We are proud of and grateful to be recognized consistently among peer institutions in this way.”

For the second year in a row, MSU is ranked No. 3 in the world for communication. Established in 1955, MSU’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences is the first college of communication in the country, and today is one of the largest.

“We are proud to be ranked among the very top communication programs in the world,” said Prabu David, dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. “These rankings recognize the extraordinary research contributions made by our faculty and their impact on the field.”

MSU disciplines in the top 25 include:
No. 2 — education
No. 3 — communication
No. 7 — environmental science and engineering
No. 12 — agricultural sciences
No. 17 — business administration
No. 21 — management
