Phytophthora Root Rot

Disease

Symptoms

Fungicide

Method of application/ Control Measures

Name:-Phytophthora Root Rot (Phytophthora parasitica)

Source:-

Infested soils.

Heavy soils saturated for five hours or longer, compacted soils, salinity, and some varieties. Favoring warm season, but plant collapses more common as crop loads increase. Most commons in turn areas and irrigation drains.

Overall Plant: - Damping off of seedlings. Weak plant appearance. Collapse in area of field follows highest soil water retention or flooding.

Leaf: - Water stressed appearance from lack of root activity.

Stem: - Simple desiccation from moisture loss. Another species of soil-borne phytophthora, P. capsici can attack stems under high moisture, especially in fields rotated with peppers.

Root and fruit: - Root: water-soaked lesions; chocolate brown xylem above the lesion and into the crown. Tap roots often rotted.

-

Soil preparations, deep ploughing, water management with frequent shallow irrigations on heavy soils. Good drainage. Staking plant and removing foliage and fruits upto a height of 15-30cm from ground level.
