TNCSH 1:A high
yielding, disease-tolerant, sunflower hybrid
A high yielding sunflower hybrid with built in tolerance to rust and leaf spot diseases has been developed by the scientist at the department of oilseeds, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genectics, Tamil Nadu agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. This promising hybrid has been released for commercial cultivation by ht farmers by TNAU recently. "TNCSH 1", the new sunflower hybrid is the cross between CMS 234 A and RHA 272. It matures within 85 to 90 days. It has recorded an average yield of 1850 kg seeds per hectare in irrigated conditions, and 1650 kg in rainfed regions, according to the scientists. It is ideal for sowing in June-July, October November (in southern districts), and in April-May. The hybrid is medium tall (145 cm to 165 cm) in stature, and it produces compact, flat and convex heads of 14.5 to 16.0 cm in diameter. The seed coat is dark grey in colour. The hull content is 21.6 per cent, and oil content 39.6 per cent. The hundred seed weight is 4.2 to 4.8 g. Besides its tolerance to Alternatia leaf spot and rust diseases, it has been found to have built in tolerance to jassids and white fly also. Oil content is much higher. While MSFH 17 had an oil content of 32.7 per cent, the seeds of the new hybrid contained 39.6 per cent oil, according to the scientists. It responds well to sound nutrient management. Liberal application of farmyard manure and other organic amendments will prove to be rewarding. A nutrient schedule of 60 kg nitrogen, 90 kg phosphorus and 60 kg potash is recommended per hectare. A seed rate of 6 kg will be needed to cover a hectare. A seed rate of 6 kg will be needed t cover a hectare. An espacement of 60 cm between rows and 30 cm within rows is ideal for getting a good stand of the crop. |
