IRRI developed "Golden Rice"

Considering the daily intake of beta-carotene in infants, childrens and adults, the scientist from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has developed a new Vitamin-A rich transgenic rice in Manila and the Institute for Plant Sciences in Switzerland.

Baptised as "golden rice", the new variety can improve the maternal and child health in developing countries by increasing the vitamin uptake.

However, it is a laboratory variety and still is not ready for commercial cultivation. It will take another three to five years, as reported.

The rice would be beneficial to people with little access to natural sources of Vitamin-A, as IRRI plans to distribute it freely among the developing countries, as reported by the Scientists.
