Early maturing maize

Two new maize varieties ‘Pusa early hybrid Makka1’ and ‘Pusa early hybrid Makka2’ both are single cross hybrids. The hybrids were developed in the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) New Delhi. Compared to the current maize hybrids that mature in 100-120 days, two new maize varieties will mature in just 70-80 days claim the scientists who have developed the hybrids.

This would apply to regions with either scanty or excess rainfall; also where farmers can grow quick maize crop in between the main cropping seasons. The new varieties are specially suitable for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and parts of Maharashtra, which have adequate water for limited period. In Bihar and Uttar Pradesh also maize must be harvested quickly before the floods, in the first week of September. In the intensive cropping system of the Indo Gangetic plains the short-duration hybrids will give an additional crop in between the main cropping patterns.
