DSH 4: Sorghum
Hybrid for Rabi
The scientists at the
All India Coordinated Sorghum Improvement Project in the University of Agricultural
Sciences (UAS), Dharwad has developed a high yielding sorghum hybrid for rabi season.
The hybrid has been released for commercial cultivation by farmers recently by UAS
as DSH 4.
A resultant of a cross
between SB 401 A and SPV 570, the new hybrid grows to an average height of 220 cm, and has
a yield potential of 3.0 tonnes of grain and 6.0 tonnes of fodder per hectare. With
a duration of 115 to 120 days, the hybrid produces semi-compact, cylindrical panicles with
tapering tip, bearing bold, cream coloured round grains and the grain quality is high as
compared to M 35-1 it matures a week ahead of M 35-1 and yields 50 per cent more.
It
is susceptible to charcoa rot and shootfly diseases.
The
ideal time for sowing the hybrid is September 1 to October 15 with seed rate of 7.5 kg/ha
and spacing 45 x 15 cm. A blanket dose of 60 kg nitrogen and 30 kg phosphorus is
advocated for getting a good yield from this hybrid.
It is the only early
hybrid in rabi with higher yields than the popular variety M 35-1, and it has been widely
accepted by the farmers in the region, according to the scientists. |
