hybrid 4
The scientists at Indian Agricultural Research
Institute, New Delhi has developed a new variety of tomato " Pusa Hybrid 4 ".
This hybrid was developed by combining
desirable attributes for quality, yield. On an average it gives 54.8 tonnes per hectare
yield. The fruits are round, smooth, medium sized, and three loculed with uniform
ripening. This hybrid takes 120 to 130 days from transplanting to fruit ripening, It is
highly tolerant to root-knot disease. This hybrid is suitable for western India.
About 100 to 150 g seeds are sufficient for
raising seedlings for a hectare. Seeds are sown 1 to 2 cm apart on raised nursery beds.
After 10 to 15 days the seedlings are transferred in small thumb nail pots. For its
cultivation well drained, rich loam soils with pH 6 to 7 are suitable. It responds more to
higher disease of fertilizer. About 15 cm tall seedlings are transplanted in the evening
on flat ridges. The spacing should be 50 x 45 cm. Harvesting of tomato is done according
