Seed treatment

It refers to the application of fungicide, insecticide or combination of both to seeds so as to disinfect and disinfest them from seed born or soil born pathogenic organisms and storage insects.

Benefits of seed treatment:

  1. Prevention of spread of plant diseases during storage and harvest period

  2. It protects seed from seed borne and soil borne diseases

  3. Improves germination provides protection from storage insects.

Types of seed treatments

Seed disinfection: refers to the eradication of fungal spores that have become establish within the seed coat. For effective control the fungicides like Agroson GN, Cereson etc. are used

Seed disinfestation: refers to destruction of surface borne organisms that have contaminated but not infected the seed surface. Chemical dips, soaks, fungicides applied as a dust, slurry have been found successful

Seed protection: To protect the seed and young seedling from organism in the soil which may cause decay of the seed before germination. Seed protectants such as Thiram, Captan, Chloranil etc. are used
