Calcutta market :Jute prices erosion
In Calcutta gunny
market, prices of almost of categories of jute goods lowered down. The prices touched
fresh lows with standard B Twill plummeting to Rs 20,600 per tonne and that of hessian
settling lower at Rs.29,400 per tonne. The decline in prices virtually kept buyers at bay
and the volume of business was limited.
The mill despatch
schedule of gunny bags to departmental buyers like FCI and other state-owned foodgrain
procuring agencies, had disrupted leading to a backlog of over 1.50 lakh bales due to the
recent strike in the jute industry.
It was stated that FCI
and other state agencies had placed orders for the supply of a total of 6.73 lakh bales of
B Twill bags of rabi season. Against this, the industry could supply 5.86 lakh bales till
end-April and asked for extension of delivery schedule up to May 31 as the supply-line was
snapped by the industrywide strike.
The data about
outstanding delivery in respect of different states stated that the backlog would not be
more than 27,000 bales and Haryana, MP represent only 4% of the total indents. This means
that the industry had kept its commitment for the supply of gunny bags for rabi seasons
despite the strike. |
