Maize News: Increasing Trend of ICAR-IIMR Bred Hybrids in DAC Maize Breeder Seed Demand

Since 2018, ICAR-IIMR has developed and released total 17 hybrids, of which 7 are field corn, 4 bio-fortified, and 3 each are of popcorn and baby corn. Till date total 26 MoUs have been signed with more than 15 different seed companies.

The hybrids which are in high demand and have the highest share in the past three years in DAC are DMRH 1308, IQMH 203, DMRH 1301 and LQMH 1.

Recently a new hybrid IMH 224 released in 2022 has also entered in the seed chain. As results of which the latest share of IIMR hybrids has gone to the highest with 62.4 % share in total DAC maize breeder seed demand received for the country.

If we look, the year-wise trends then, it started with less than 1 % in year 2018-19 and has reached to 62.4% with retaining top position continuously for three years (Fig. 1) (2021-22 to 20223-24) in the maize seed demand.

The DMRH 1308 recommended for rabi season cultivation in central western zone and Bihar state has retained top position in DAC maize seed demand continuously for three years. The hybrids which are in seed chain has the maximum MoUs signed e.g. DMRH 1301 (11 MoUs), LQMH 1 (5), DMRH 1308 (4) and IQMH 203 (2). The signing is still going on for all of these hybrids.
