The present scenario of fertiliser production shows that the total production of fertiliser nutrients (N+P2O5) was marginally up (0.5 per cent) during January 2000 compared to January 1999. While N production at 940 thousand tonnes during January 2000 was 1 per cent lower compared to January 1999, P2O5 at 301 thousand tonnes was 6 per cent higher during the same period. The decline in N production was on account of reduction in straight N although contribution through complex fertilisers shown moderate increase. There is decline in the production of straight P2O5 by 10 thousand tonnes whereas increased contribution through complex fertilisers was about 28 thousand tonnes. This led to a net increase of 18 thousand tonnes P2O5 during the month. During the 10 month period, i.e. April’99 to January 2000, total production of both N and P2O5 marked improvement, N production at 9.239 million tonnes and P2O5 at 2.819 million tonnes during April-January 1999-2000 recorded increase of 5 and 7 per cent respectively compared to April-January 1998-99. Nearly 59 per cent of the increased production of N came through straight fertilisers (mainly urea) and the balance 41 per cent through complex fertilisers. On the other hand, entire increase in P2O5 production came through complex fertilisers while SSP shown negative growth. Production of N and P2O5 surpassed the respective targets by 87 and 36 thousand tonnes during April-January 1999-2000. There is improvement in capacity utilisation of N from 100% to 102% whereas in case of P2O 5 ,it is dropped from 101% to 92% which was due to proportionately lower increase in production compared to increase in capacity.
