Once the seeds are
sorted from the collection of hips, they are sown an about 250,000 young plants from all
product lines are subjected to a strict and careful selection process. This selection
process lasts for about eight to ten years for rose bushes to be used in the production of
fresh cut flowers. The selected varieties are then tested on 15 private research stations
distributed across all latitudes. Finally only a dozen varieties are marketed after these
have been tested in each country. In India for growing roses under greenhouses with its
good and salubrious climate, rich soil, conducive temperature, sufficient light and
strategic location of the country from the East to the West is taken into consideration.
Growing habit
The commercial life
of a rose plant ranges from five to seven years. Each plant produces around 150 flowers
for its commercial life cycle, although the figure could vary depending upon the variety,
growing conditions, etc.
Harvesting
Flowers are normally
cut between 45 and 52 days depending upon the growing technique and per hectare one can
produce around 1.5 million flowers per year. The viable area to start growing cut roses
has been identified as three hectares or 30,000 sq. meters by the various Govt. agencies
that have been funding this Industry.
The cost involved per
square meter is estimated to be between the plant with a planting density of 70000 plants
per hectare. |
