Govt. likely to boost sugar export

Taking into account the anticipated sugar surplus and the production was likely to touch a record of 180-lakh tonnes this year, the Central Govt. decided to encourage export of sugar. The incentive to be given to the manufactures would be in the form of concession in relation to their liability under the levy sugar arrangement, as reported by the Union ministry for Civil Supplies and Consumer's Affairs.

On the move to offer concessions to encourage sugar export, further reported that in addition to 180 lakh tonnes of sugar estimated to be produced in the country this year, there were carry-over stocks of 67.23 lakh tonnes. Thus, there would be a surplus of about 96 lakh tonnes this year, as the consumption was expected to be around 150 lakh tonnes. It is reported that the govt. had already taken a view on the recommendations made by the Mahajan Committee in its report on the sugar industry. The decisions would be made public only after the matter was considered and approved by the Union Cabinet next month.
