Fertilizer Industry Statistics

With the current Foodgrains production standing at about 200 million tonnes, India needs to produce an additional 5-6 million tonnes of Foodgrains annually in the next decade to meet the requirement of an estimated population of nearly 1120 million in 2010 AD. The added problem is that, now we will have to produce more food and other agricultural commodities under conditions of diminishing per capita arable land and irrigation water resources and expanding biotic and abiotic stresses.. Because of continues cultivation over centuries and intensification of agriculture in recent years, there has been progressive and substantial depletion of the soil reserves. Of late, secondary and micronutrient deficiencies are also emerging and the crop response to these nutrients is increasing. There is a need to add plant nutrients to the soil through mineral fertilizers, organic manures, biofertilizers etc. In India the highs yielding varieties of cereals is used in the ‘Green Revolution’ and have worked as a catalyst in increasing the fertiliser demand. It is estimated that by 2010 about 246 tonnes of Foodgrains will be needed annually and to produce this about 25+/2 million tonnes (mt) of plant nutrients (N+P2O5+K2O) as mineral fertilizer would be needed.

Cash Crops like Sugarcane

For sugarcane production of 383 million tonnes from 4.25 million hectares of land, its nutrient requirement will be of 0.86 to 2.04 million tonnes of NPK.

Pulses

Pulses are important sources of vegetable protein for human and animal nutrition especially in developing countries. India shares prime position in pulse production accounting for 22 per cent of the global production of pulses. The National Commission Agriculture (1976) fixed a production target of 25 million tonnes for 2000 AD to meet the dietary requirements of the growing population.

Fruit Crops

Contribution of fruits to nutritional security aspect of the national food security is unique. The area under fruit crops is expected to go up substantially from 3.889 million hectare in 2000 to 5.15 million in 2010.

Vegetable Crops

The vegetable production of our country before independence was merely 15 million tonnes (mt) and now it is 84 million tonnes. By the end of the next decade (2009-2010), it is expected that vegetable will occupy about 8 million hectares (m ha) of land and production will be around 160 million tones. To fulfill this desired target, its fertilizer requirement will be 1.67mt urea, 2.325 SSP or 0.89 Dap, and 0.453 mt of Mop respectively.
