‘Azad B 3’: new brinjal

A long-fruited brinjal has been released by the Central Variety Release Committee for sub-humid Sutlej Ganga alluvial planins and sub-humid to humid eastern and southern uplands of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh.

Brinjal ‘Azad B 3’

It is a high-yielding, long-fruited brinjal producing bright glossy, purple fruits having attractive shape and size. The colour of its fruits is the premium attribute. Its plants are semi-erect and evenly spread. The stems are green and non-spinous while fruits are medium-thick, long, shining purple, smooth, stigmatic end blunt and calyx shining green.

‘Azad B 3’ is suitable for cultivation in the rainy season with normal package of practices. However, a dose of 100 kg N, 50 kg P2O5 and 50 kg K2O/ha with a plant spacing of 70cm x 60cm gives better yield. Its yields vary from region-to-region since it is highly amenable to yield.

Though it is widely adaptable, yet it is best suited to sub-humid to humid conditions. It has firm flesh, slow enzymic browning of the flesh, smooth pericarp besides being less seedy and better shelf life with prolonged freshness and colour retention. The fruit traits are excellent in terms of shape and size which mark it for shape and size which mark it for growing for fresh market.
