High yielding semi spreading groundnut

A semi-spreading groundnut variety with high yield potential and attractive red kernels has been developed by the scientists at the (TNAU) department of Oilseeds, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. This improved variety has been released for commercial cultivation as ‘CO (Gn) 5’ recently. Maturing is 125 days; this new variety is resistant to many pests and disease. The variety recorded an overall dry pod yield of 1585 kg per hectare under rainfed situations, which is 13.4 % higher than that of TMV 10. At the adaptive research trial at Kallipatti in Namakkal district, it registered the highest yield of 3250 kg dry pods per hectare. It is found to be suitable for growing in Kharif (rainfed), early Adi pattam (June-July) and late Adi pattam (July-August CO (Gn) 5 has dark green foliage and pod characteristics most acceptable to the farmers. The plants grow to a height of 25 to 40 cm. The quantitative analyses of kernel and oil at TNAU and ICRISAT have shown desirability of the variety for oil content (53%), shelling out-turn (71%) and protein content (22.6%), according to scientists.
