A new pea variety "Vivek 6", has been released by the Central variety release committee, New Delhi. It is recommended for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh hills, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan. A cross of "Uphar" and "VL Matar" matures in 135-140 days in the midhills and 80-85 days in the plains. Its plants are dwarf and vigorous with dark green leaves. The pods are smooth, straight, medium sized (6-7 cm), light green in colour and completely filled. They contain 6 grains each. The plants are tolerant to cold and moisture-stress conditions. The crop is sown from mid-October to mid-November in plains and second fortnight to November in plains and in midhills. In higher hills, it can be sown during March-April. A seed rate of 80-100 kg/ha is enough for a hectare crop. Add 15-20 tonnes of farmyard manure 20 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 40 K2O/ha to get higher yield. Adding Furadon at the rate of 30kg/ha in soil before sowing keeps cut-worms and shoot-borer and leaf-miner, whereas powdery mildew can be controlled by spraying wettable sulphur or karathane (2.5 g/litre of water) 2-3 times at 10-15 days intervals. Other cultural practices are same to those of other medium duration pea varieties. Thus "Vivek 6" provides 79.36- 103.58 q/ha of pods, about 10.8% higher than ‘VL Matar 3’. In all India coordinated trails ‘Vivek 6’ gave 21 and 8.3% higher pod yield than "Selection 82". |
