CO-2: High yielding guinea grass

The new variety of guinea grass viz. CO.2 has been developed by the scientists at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. It is a high yielding guinea grass- with profuse tillering released for commercial cultivation.

It is a cross between CO-1 and Centenario, fodder is highly suited for multiple cuts in a year. The fodder crop needs minimum irrigation, and it can also perform well in rainfed regions endowed with evenly distributed rainfall. It grows tall and tillers profusely. It produces 80 to 100 tillers per clump. It has found to be free from any pests or diseases and do not requires plant protection measures.

Characteristics features:

  • Resistant to lodging.

  • Shade tolerant crop.

  • Profuse tillering and grows tall.

  • Grows to a height of 250-270 cm height.

  • Has yield potential of 270 tonnes of fresh grass per hectare in a year.

  • High dry matter and crude protein content.

  • Quick regeneration capacity.

  • High leaf-stem ratio.
