|  Total milk production
 In India, the market milk
industry may be said to have started in 1950-1 when the Central Dairy of Aarey Milk Colony
was commissioned and went into stream. The industry is still in its infancy and barely 10
per cent of our total milk production undergoes organized handling. Indias position in relation to milk producing countries of the

production in the country for the year 1996-97 was estimated at 68.6million MT. At this
production, the per capita availability was to be 20g per day against the minimum
requirement of 250g per day as recommended by ICMI. Thus there is a tremendous scope for
increasing the production. The population of breeding cows and buffaloes in milk over
three years of age was 62.6million and 42.4 million respectively.
