New Varieties- Short duration cotton
Scientists
at the cotton Research Station (CRS) have developed high yielding, short-duration cotton
for rice fallow tracts in the state. The variety developed is SVPR-3. It is a hybrid
derivative of the cross between LH 900 and 1301 DD, the improved variety of medium-staple
cotton is a compact dwarf genotype with duration of 135 to 140 days. It has recorded an
average seed cotton yield of 1294 kg per hectare in irrigated fields. Under favourable
conditions, it has demonstrated a potential of yielding 2634 kg per hectare, according to
scientists. It recorded a higher yield than MCU 7, ADT 1 and Anjali. In the All India
Coordinated Cotton improvement project trials, it established its superiority over 5166
and MCU 5 by recording 18.1% and 18% higher yields of seed cotton. Besides high yield, it
has a higher lint output; its fibre qualities are comparable to that of MCU 7 and can spin
30's and 40's. It is tolerant to stem-weevil and moderately resistant to leaf-spot. It is
resistant to bacterial blight diseases. SVPR-3 is ideally suited for "Thai
pattam" (January February) season. Its earliness and high tolerance to drought and
pests and diseases has made it attractive to the farmers who take up cotton cultivation in
the rice fallows. Growing to an average height of 80-90 cm, this erect and compact variety
has determinate growth habit. It produces small round bolls, each boll weighing about 3 g.
It produces white, medium-staple lint. A seed rate of 15 kg is recommended to cover a
hectare. A spacing of 60 cm by 30 cm is advocated to maintain an optimum stand in the
field. The seeds should be dibbled directly if the soil is in waxy condition. If the soil
is dry, water should be let in and allowed dry gradually. Then when it reaches the waxy
conditions, the seeds may be sown. The first irrigation should be given on the 4th
day after sowing, and subsequent watering should follow 10 to 15 days interval depending
on the soil water regimen.
The
variety responds well to sound nutrient management. A dose of 30-kg nitrogen, 30 kg
phosphorus and 30 kg potash should be applied as basal dressing per hectare. The rest of
the 30 kg nitrogen should be applied on the 45th day after sowing. Integrated
weed management and pest management strategies will prove to be rewarding in establishing
a healthy stand of cotton.

Biofertilizers in cotton
The
significance of the role of microorganisms like Rhizobium in fixing atmospheric nitrogen
and hence enhancing soil fertility has been recognized since time immemorial, however,
commercialization of their use is relatively a new innovation. Moreover, biofertilizers
are apparently environment friendly and low cost or almost nonmonetary input, which can
play a significant role in plant nutrition. The demand for nutrients by higher yielding
crops/varieties is high and therefore, biofertilizers cannot be a substitute to chemical
fertilizers, rather with a ability to fix 15-40 kg nitrogen/ha, the biofertilizers can
only be complimentary or supplementary to mineral nutrition demand of the crop.
Rhizobium-
a symbiotic bacterium colonizes on roots of the specific legumes to form root nodules.
Rhizobium enter roots of legumes generally through root hairs. Effective nodules are well
developed and posses pink colour due to the presence of a pigment leghaemoglobin,
Rhizobium has the ability to fix nitrogen for the benefit of a leguminous host plant. In
view of crop specificity of a Rhizobium, selection of an appropriate strain as an
inoculants for a given host genotype is of utmost important for desirable results.
- Nonsymbiotic or free
living nitrogen bacteria
These
bacteria fix nitrogen in rhizosphere and provide it to the plant. Positive response have
been reported with the use of Azotobacters in cereals like wheat, rice, sorghum, pearl
millet and cotton. Generally these are less effective in dry land areas because these
soils are poor in organic matter and water content.
It
colonies the root mass and fixes nitrogen in loose association with plants in an
environment of low oxygen tension. These organisms require low energy, well effective even
in saline alkali soils, perform well up to 30-402 C, and establish well in the
roots of the crop. Excellent in rice, wheat, barley, oats and pearl millet.
- Nutrient solubilizing
bacteria
Indian
soils are generally low to medium in available phosphorus. The problem with phosphorus is
that generally 10-15% of applied phosphorus is available to crop and the rest get
conforms. The response of phosphobacterin is high in soils rich in organic matter and low
in available phosphorus.
Seed
treatment is given with biofertilizers viz. Azobacter, Azospirillum, and
Phosphorous Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) @ 25 gram per kg of seeds. For seed treatment a
paste (slurry) of biofertilizer should be prepared enough thick, which cover the seeds and
these seeds dried in shade. After completely dried seeds should be used for sowing.
