| A new
    pearl millet variety: CZ-IC 923
 A new pearl millet
variety has been developed for north -western states of India. The CZ-IC 923 has been
developed by random mating 21 S1s selected from cross of ICMV 82132 x ICMV 87901,
out of many S1s tested at many locations in north-western India and selected on the
basis of their performance. The variety was further improved by mass selection for
uniformity. The variety was tested in All- India Co-ordinated trials. The CZ-IC 923 is
resistant to downy mildew, smut and various insect pests. The panicles of this variety are
medium long and lanceolate to oblanceolate. They are compact to semi-compact and
non-bristled. A distinguishing feature of this variety is its longer panicles, thicker and
bolder grains as compared to ICMV 155. CZ-IC 923 is a
medium maturity open pollinated variety. It flowers in 40-50 days and matures in 70-82
days. This variety performs well under terminal drough conditions, which are common in
pearl millet growing areas in northern India. Seed are medium
sized and grey with yellow base, generally preferred in northern India. This variety is
recommended as replacement of ICTP 8203, ICMV 155 and RCB-IC 9 in zone A. |
