Ooty – 1: A new peas variety

Horticultural Research Station, Vijayanagaram, Ooty has released a new peas variety namely ‘Ooty-1 Peas’ which is a pure line selection from the accession PS-133. The plants are dwarf type, grow to a mean height of 50.1cm. Normally the first white colured flowers are born either single or in pair on the 11th node at 45th day after sowing. It has the yield potential of 12.1 t/ha in duration of 90 days. The pods are dark green, long and smooth with a mean number of 9 seeds, which possess good cooling quality. The first green pod harvest commences on 70th day and the harvest lasts upto 90 days. For seed purpose the pods are allowed to mature upto 120 days. It is moderately resistant to the major disease namely, powdery mildew. It is resistant to whitefly and moderately resistant to pod borer and aphid. The seeds contain high protein (19.94%), ascorbic acid (18.2 mg/100g) and total sugar 2.8 mg/g). It is suitable for all the three seasons namely main, autumn and irrigated. It is suitable for both high and middle elevation of the Nilgiris.

Cultivation

  • Soil and climate:

It requires well drained loamy soil and cool climate. The temperate climatic zones from 1600 to 2500m above MSL are suitable.

  • Season

Irrigated: February – March
Main: April – May

Duration 90 days

  • Preparation of field

Dig the land thoroughly. prepare it to find tilth and form furrows. Treat the seed with Trichoderma @ 4 g/kg or Thiram or Captan @ 2 g/kg.

  • Sowing

Spacing: 40 x 10 cm
Seed rate: 100 kg/ha. The seeds should be sown on the furrows at a spacing of 10 cm.

  • Fertilizer requirement

Basal application: i. Farmyard manure 20 t/ha.
ii. NPN @ 60:80:70 kg/ha
Top dressing: Apply Nitrogen 60 kg/ha 30 days after sowing.

Application of biofertilizers: Treat the seeds with Rhizobium culture at the rate of 2 kg and apply 2 kg/ha of Phosphobacteria and 2 kg/ha of Azospirillum as soil application before sowing.

  • After cultivation

Weeding should be done 15 days after sowing. Subsequent weeding as and when necessary. Staking should be done on 45th day. If staking materials are not available, it can be replaced with plastic ropes tied at two different heights on both the sides of row at 15 and 30cm days after sowing.

  • Irrigation : Once in a week

  • Plant Protection

Powdery mildew: Spray wettable sulphur 2 g/lit, three rounds at 15 days interval.

  • Yield:

The first flowering starts 45th day after sowing. The first green pod harvest commences 70th day and the harvests last upto 90th day.
