| Sesame varieties
 Among the new
improved technologies, recommended for increased yield, in sesame sesamum indicum
selecting improved variety gains first and foremost importance by contributing about 20
per cent increased yield over local unimproved varieties. The varieties TMV 3, TMV 4, TMV
6, CO 1, SVPR 1 and VRI 1 are widely cultivated in Tamil Nadu. The varieties TMV 3, TMV 4,
TMV 6 and CO1 are best suited for irrigated condition for growing during February
March. Besides the cold weather season (October December), the varieties like TMV 3
and TMV 5 can also be grown during June July under rainfed conditions and better
yield can be realised. The sowing will start during January February after the
harvest of Samba paddy. The short period between the harvest of Samba paddy and planting
of Kuruvai paddy is being utilized effectively to raise rice fallow sesame corp. The
sesame varieties like TMV 3, TMV 4, TMV 6 and VRI 1 can be grown effectively to realise
maximum yield under rice fallow condition. Varieties like TMV 3, TMV 4 and TMV 6 with the
duration of 80-85 days may selectively be grown after the harvest of Samba paddy. The
variety, VRI 1 with the duration of 70-75 days suits specially for rice fallow after the
harvests of late samba. Its shortest duration helps the farmers to go for sesame crops
even after the harvest of late samba. Within two and half months the yield is realised by
the farmer and he can go for Kuruvai paddy planting during May-June. The package of
practices for normal irrigated sesame holds well for the rice fallow sesame crop also. |  Headlines
