A new high yielding potato variety MS/5-1543 was recommended for cultivation in Indo-gangetic plains
(Northern and eastern plains) during the 33rd Annual Group Meeting of AICRP on Potato held at G.B. Pant
University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand.
This variety is medium matures within 75-90 days with yield potential of 40 t/ha. It possesses moderate
level of late blight resistance, good keeping and culinary quality.
Kufri Bahar and Kufri Jyoti are the two most predominant varieties in the country. It produces attractive
white-cream ovoid uniform tubers with shallow to medium eyes and cream flesh colour.
The new potato variety will improve the productivity by 10-15% and profitability of the farmers, thus improving
their socio-economic conditions.
