Sesame varieties

Among the new improved technologies, recommended for increased yield, in sesame sesamum indicum selecting improved variety gains first and foremost importance by contributing about 20 per cent increased yield over local unimproved varieties. The varieties TMV 3, TMV 4, TMV 6, CO 1, SVPR 1 and VRI 1 are widely cultivated in Tamil Nadu. The varieties TMV 3, TMV 4, TMV 6 and CO1 are best suited for irrigated condition for growing during February – March. Besides the cold weather season (October – December), the varieties like TMV 3 and TMV 5 can also be grown during June – July under rainfed conditions and better yield can be realised. The sowing will start during January – February after the harvest of Samba paddy. The short period between the harvest of Samba paddy and planting of Kuruvai paddy is being utilized effectively to raise rice fallow sesame corp. The sesame varieties like TMV 3, TMV 4, TMV 6 and VRI 1 can be grown effectively to realise maximum yield under rice fallow condition. Varieties like TMV 3, TMV 4 and TMV 6 with the duration of 80-85 days may selectively be grown after the harvest of Samba paddy. The variety, VRI 1 with the duration of 70-75 days suits specially for rice fallow after the harvests of late samba. Its shortest duration helps the farmers to go for sesame crops even after the harvest of late samba. Within two and half months the yield is realised by the farmer and he can go for Kuruvai paddy planting during May-June. The package of practices for normal irrigated sesame holds well for the rice fallow sesame crop also.
