Export-value realized

Unit values

Unit values or prices give comparative idea of the earnings from export (See Table 5). Lobsters had the highest price of Rs. 330.43 per kg. Followed by frozen shrimp (Rs. 263.74 per kg) and other crustaceans (Rs. 260.27 per kg). Minimum price was fetched by dried fish (Rs. 39.28 per kg). Shrimp had the highest contribution to value (67.87%) due to both maximum quantity and the high price. Lobsters on the other hand, had the highest price but the quantity was very small (0.89%). In the case of frozen fish in general, although the quantity was large (39%), unit price was relatively low (Rs. 47.67 per kg). Cuttle fish and squids also fetched comparatively good prices (Rs. 87.41 and Rs. 92.41 per kg respectively). The overall average unit value for all marine products in the year 1998-99 came to Rs. 138.84 per kg, which is good to sustain export trade.

The major importing countries of Indian fish and fish products are Japan, U.S.A and Western Europe. The other countries such as Malaysia, Bangladesh, Singapore, Bahrain, United Arab Emirat, etc. are also buying fish to a smaller, greater extent the species of their choices. The seafood industry in India has become export oriented and high unit values received for Indian fishes, particularly the shrimp has been the deciding factor.
