PAU Organizes Apiculture Training Course

A seven-day vocational apiculture training course for beginners was organized at PAU’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Moga, under the aegis of National Bee Board.

The PAU’s Integrated Beekeeping Development Centre, Department of Entomology, conducted the course wherein trainees including farmers and unemployed rural youth from 27 villages of aspirational district – Moga, selected in Punjab by NITI Aayog (Government of India) under Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan for the period from June 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018, participated.

Dr Pardeep Kumar Chhuneja, Head, Department of Entomology and Director of the course, informed that the main objective of the training was to impart technical know-how and practical skills on various aspects of apiculture, which provides remunerative employment opportunity towards enhancing farmer’s income and rural upliftment.

Dr Jaspal Singh, Senior Entomologist and technical coordinator of the course, said the course included technical lectures and practical/demonstrations in apiculture by beekeeping scientists, and lectures by experts from AGMARK, public sector bank and State Department of Horticulture.

The course aimed at imparting knowledge to the trainees regarding quality aspects of honey and financial support schemes of the Government of India for promoting the development of beekeeping, he added. Besides, an exposure tour of the trainees to the leading beekeeping equipment, machinery and honey processing plant manufacturers, and honey traders and exporters of the Punjab, was also organized during the training programme.
