ICAR-AICRP Developed and Released New Crossbred Pig Variety

ICAR - All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Pigs centre has developed a new crossbred pig variety suitable for the humid tropical agro-climatic condition of Kerala by crossing pure lines of Large White Yorkshire males with half bred of Large White Yorkshire x Desi females. The inheritance level has been stabilized at 75:25 % for LWY and Desi.

The new crossbred pig variety developed was released by Dr. H. Rahman, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR today at Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Mannuthy.

Crossbred Pig :
The crossbred pig variety developed is white in colour with black spots on head and hind quarters. Mannuthy White variety has good prolificacy, higher growth rate, better feed conversion efficiency and more dressing percentage compared to indigenous pigs. The animals have lower back fat thickness than the exotic Large White Yorkshire pigs. The breed can gain 94 kg body weight at slaughter age of 10 months and back fat of 2.10 cm thickness with feed conversion efficiency of 5.50 (dry matter basis). Mannuthy White is well adapted and suited to low input rearing system of Kerala.

Performance evaluation was done for ten generations with respect to litter size, litter weight growth rate, feed utilization efficiency and lean meat production. Animals were showing distinct characteristics and were validated in the farmer’s fields for further confirmation.
