Kerala state to focus on organic farmingHome

"State will focus on giving priority to organic farming practices as a public movement", said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Organic farming: Kerala’ as part of the South Indian Agri Fest, the Chief Minister said organic farming should be promoted at the village-level itself. It was essential for the survival of the next generation, he said.
The Chief Minister said grama sabhas could play a key role in promoting organic farming by encouraging people to come together to cultivate pesticide-free vegetables. Stating that Kerala was making strides in the development of agriculture, he said hi-tech farming had become common in the State over the last few years. The State could become self-sufficient in vegetable production if sincere efforts were made, he said.
Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan presided. In his address, he said the State would become totally organic by 2016 and all grama sabhas would conduct meetings in September first week to plan ways to achieve this objective.
