Dr. S. S. Dhaliwal, Senior Soil Chemist in Department of Soil Science has been awarded the prestigious, IZA-FAI 2018 Award for Excellence for ‘Promoting Zinc in Indian Agriculture’, on 5th December, 2018 by Mr. D. V. Sadananda Gowda, the Hon’ble Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Statics and Programme Implementation and Rao Inderjit Singh, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Chemicals &Fertilizers during FAI Annual Seminar held at New Delhi. The award comprising of a gold medal, a certificate, a citation certificate and a cash prize was presented to Dr S. S. Dhaliwal for his contributions in development of technologies for judicious and efficient management of zinc fertilizers under different crops and cropping systems.
Dr S. S. Dhaliwal joined PAU in 1994 as Assistant Soil Chemist and rose to the post of Senior Soil Chemist in 2009. Presently, he is discharging the duties as Incharge, AICRP-Micronutrients Scheme. Prior tothis, he served in different ICAR projects viz. AICRP (dryland agriculture), AICRP (forage crops) and AICRP (cropping systems research). Dr Dhaliwal was a visiting scientist at the University of Florida, USA in 2009 under advance training at Gulf Coast Research and Education Center (GCREC), University of Florida, USA where he worked on “Developing guidelines and re-capitalization of micronutrient fertility through management of organic wastes (biosolids)”. He has won several awards including IZA-FAI team award in 2012 and Chaudhary Devi Lal award for AICRP-Micronutrients scheme in 2016.
Dr Dhaliwal played a pivotal role in generating huge funds through adhoc projects. So far he has completed two projects as PI and two as CoPI. Presently, Dr Dhaliwal is holding two adhoc projects as PI and four as CoPI. He has taught both UG and PG courses and has guided six M Sc and one Ph D students as their Major Advisor.
Dr S.S. Dhaliwal has vast working experience in the field of micronutrients and his research work is focused on distribution and management of micronutrients under different agricultural land use systems, integrated nutrient management under different fodder crops and cropping systems. He has more than 300 publications including 130 peer review research publications in national and international journals of repute, 66 extension publications, 8 research bulletins, 3 laboratory manuals, 7 book chapters and a compendium on dryland technology. He is chief the editor of book “Agriculture and Climate Change” to which Dr S. S. Dhaliwal contributed three chapters.
