UAS Organized Four-day Krishi Mela.

Dharwad: The University Of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, organized the four-day Krishi Mela, which will begin on 24th September. The theme of the Krishi Mela is "Pulses for Nutritional Security". The 2016 is declared as the International Year of Pulses by the United Nations.

Under the jurisdiction of the university to opt for pulses, emphasis has been given to draw the attention of the farming community in seven districts, said UAS vice-chancellor D P Biradar.

Seed Mela will be held on all four days of the event to encourage farmers for the rabi season. The Seed Mela will be inaugural by Chairman of Farmers' Right Authority and Plant Protection Varieties, R R Hanchinaal.

A target of selling nearly 4,511 quintals of various seeds has set by the university. Farmers, who have been protecting desi seeds, will be identified and honoured at the mela.

Fruit and flower show, Matsya Mela, cattle exhibition, dog show, ram show and sale of horticulture saplings will be the special features. A few farmers from Mudhol have expressed their desire to put original Mudhol Hounds and puppies on sale.

Latest agriculture machinery will showcase by total of 900 stalls. 21 booklets will be available at prices between Rs 1 and Rs 5 to guide farmers on water, soil and new farming methods.

On September 25 "A farmer to farmer" programme will be held. Awards for the Best Farmer, Best Farm Woman will be presented and in the afternoon a session on banking facilities for farmers will be held.

A sessions on biofuel and agroforestry will be held on the concluding day. The Krishi Mela will inaugurated at 4.30pm on Saturday by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
